The Denver Broncos will be put up for sale, the Pat Bowlen Trust announced on Tuesday. The trustees aim to sell the team by the start of the 2022 season, team president and CEO Joe Ellis said in a statement.

The decision comes after a judge removed the final legal barrier to a sale on Jan. 11, terminating the right of first refusal agreement between former Broncos owners Edgar Kaiser and Pat Bowlen. The estate of the late Kaiser, who owned the team from 1981 to 1984, had claimed that the right of first agreement signed when Bowlen bought the team in 1984 gave Kaiser's estate the right to match any offer if the Broncos were ever put up for sale. Kaiser died in 2012 and Bowlen in 2019.

The Bowlen family said in a statement owning the team has been "the honor of our lifetime."

"There are truly no words to express our deep appreciation to all of Broncos Country for its unwavering support during the past four decades," the family said.

Ellis said before training camp last August that the plan is for the ownership issue to be settled before the start of the 2022 season.

Last month, he said the team would make an announcement about ownership after making its head-coaching hire. Denver hired Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett to replace Vic Fangio on Jan. 27.

"The Broncos are a special franchise that is part of the fabric of this region, and whoever emerges as the new owner will certainly understand what the team means to our great fans and this community," Ellis said.
