Everton have appointed Kevin Thelwell as their new director of football after the departure of Marcel Brands in December.

Thelwell, 48, was working as the head of sport at New York Red Bulls, and previously spent seven years at Wolverhampton Wanderers, including four as sporting director.

The Red Bulls made last year’s MLS play-offs with the youngest squad in the competition. "On behalf of the organization, we would like to thank Kevin for his contributions and efforts to the club over the last two years," said Marc de Grandpre, general manager, New York Red Bulls.

"We wish Kevin all the best, both personally and professionally, in his new endeavor."

Thelwell’s background is in academy work, having been the youngest academy manager in the country while at Derby County.

He was at Wolves as they rose from League One in 2013-14 to the Europa League in 2019-20, and was responsible for the recruitment of players such as Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves, Adama Traore, and Conor Coady.

Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Thelwell said: “I’m so pleased to be joining Everton and to have the opportunity to play a part in the club’s ambitious journey.

“I’m greatly looking forward to working with Frank and the players and to helping the owner and board achieve their long-term footballing objectives.

“The owner, the chairman and the CEO all presented compelling reasons for me to join this great club and I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with them all and to move Everton forward. I can’t get wait to get started.”

Everton are currently 16th in the Premier League, and face Manchester City on Saturday evening.
