Daniel Briere is the new special assistant to the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, the team announced on Tuesday. The former Flyers center will be involved in all aspects of the team's hockey operations department, "including scouting and player development," Philadelphia said.

"I'm excited for this new opportunity to join the Flyers hockey operations department," Briere said in a statement. "I want to thank Chuck Fletcher and Dave Scott for their confidence and support over the last several years, and I look forward to helping them continue to build a successful team on and off the ice."

Briere, 44, spent six seasons as a member of the Flyers, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2010. The forward played 973 career NHL games, registering 307 goals and 389 assists.

Briere spent five years with the Maine Mariners of the ECHL, most recently as the team's president and governor. He also worked with the Flyers' player development department in a part-time role for the last two seasons.

The Flyers have a 15-22-8 record, currently sitting tied for sixth in the Metropolitan division.
