Former Tottenham and Fulham midfielder Mousa Dembele will retire at the end of his contract, which expires next season.

Dembele, 34, plays for Guangzhou City in the Chinese Super League.

A box-to-box midfielder, Dembele first appeared in the Premier League after signing for Fulham from AZ Alkmaar in 2010. He then joined Tottenham for £15 million in 2012, making 181 appearances in a seven-year stay.

He became a crucial part of Mauricio Pochettino’s side, with Kieran Trippier telling The Athletic last month: “He was the difference between winning a trophy or not”. Tottenham lost the Champions League final after selling him to Guangzhou in January 2019.

Dembele won 82 caps for Belgium, playing at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

He was forced to clarify on Instagram on Tuesday morning that his retirement was not effective immediately, saying: “Hi everyone, first of all I would like to thank you all for the messages I have received.

“To clear up, I haven’t stopped yet. I still have a year on my contract left.

“But I can already share I will stop my career after this year is finished. Thank you.”
